Purpose The purpose of the IEEE Canada TELUS Innovation Award is to offer IEEE student members the opportunity to engage individually or as a team in a significant ICT project, such as their final year undergraduate project in an engineering or technology program, enter this project into the competition to have an opportunity to report, both, verbally and in writing on this project before a panel of industrial, academic and media experts. The project would have a strong design and/or research component with the emphasis on design that "embodies the spirit of innovation" and has strong application in industry in the foreseeable future. The project would be carried out at an undergraduate institution (University or College) based in Canada (IEEE Region 7). Prize The team members of up to 9 selected teams will be hosted for the live competition at a location to be determined annually. Travel will be reimbursed for the selected students/teams of students funded by TELUS and administered by IEEE Canada SAC. IEEE Carleton University is proud to announce the launch of IEEE Computer Society Chapter this Summer. The Computer Society Chapter will extend the activities of the student brach to the academic streams like Computer Systems Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. Chaired by Farhad Khan, Computer Systems Engineering III, and Professor Trevor Pearce, Dept. of Systems and Computer Engineering as the Faculty Advisor, the chapter will start it's activities through administering free Linux tutorials for the Engineering students, organizing a first year programming contest and possibly conducting some research work on RFID.

Dr. Calvin Plett, Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics, has been awarded the 2006 IEEE Outstanding Branch Counselor Award. The award aims to recognize the efforts of Branch Counselors whose dedication and efforts exemplify the IEEE's commitment to educational, personal, professional and technical developments of students. The award is presented annually and carries a monetary prize and personalized certificate. There were seven recipients of the award worldwide. Dr. Plett joined the Department of Electronics at Carleton University in 1989. He received a B.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo (1982) and a M.Eng (1986) and Ph.D. (1991) degrees from Carleton University. Before joining Carleton, he worked in industry for many companies including the Atomic Energy of Canada, Xerox and Bell-Northern Research. He has been the counselor of the IEEE Carleton Student Branch for 15 years.

IEEE memberships are sold twice a year - in the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters. In Fall, full year memberships are sold for the following year from Jan to Dec. In the Winter, only half-year memberships are sold. For the IEEE 2004 membership, the regular price for full-year membership is $42 and the six-month membership is $25. There is a promotional discount during the first month of term (i.e. September and January) For Fall: 1 year membership is $35. For Winter: Prices will be notified. The IEEE Membership is now filled online at www.ieee.org and instructions are posted in the office. In order to receive the discount special rate, the applicant must fill out the membership form at the office, choose cash as the payment option, and print out a copy in the office. Then, the printed form and cash is given to the volunteer in charge of the office, who in return provides a receipt.
