This workshop offers success strategies for practicing usability engineering in organizations developing software products and services for the public or for internal users.

It provides effective organizational skills that can be put to immediate use by interaction designers, computer scientists, web designers, software engineers, graphic designers, information architects, usability engineers, industrial designers, and other professionals involved in pursuing the goal of optimal user experiences for end users.

Such professionals working in government agencies, non-profit organizations, vendor companies, as well as in the commercial sector, will find this course of relevance to their goal of successfully introducing and integrating usability engineering methods and practices into their development organizations.

The workshop first outlines how to make the business case for usability engineering in general - and specific usability project plans in particular - by adapting general cost-justification techniques to estimate expected return on investment (ROI) for usability initiatives. This technique can be used to solicit funding. Cost-justification is discussed across a wide variety of contexts, including both commercial and internal traditional business applications, public web sites, intranets, and web-based applications.

The elevator challenge programming contest is a challenge to develop the most efficient elevator dispatching algorithm for education and entertainment. Alone or in groups, contestants use the supplied development kit to develop a Controller object to manage the elevators of simulated buildings. Along the way participants exercise their object-oriented Java programming skills.

The 1st speaker is a recent graduate who will describe the transition process from an academic to a career lifestyle. The 2nd speaker is an industry professional who will educate the attendees about the importance of networking and will talk about how to network in different event settings. The 3rd and final speaker for the night is a successful and experienced individual from the high-tech industry who will talk about personal experiences of working their way up the corporate ladder.

The IEEE organized information session for the Nicol Competition will feature Peter Eddison as the keynote speaker. He was one of the the distinguished judges for the 2005 National Nicol Award. Peter Eddison is currently President and CEO of AutoSkill International Inc., a position he has held since September 2001. AutoSkill is an Ottawa-based developer of reading and mathematics software for the K-12 market, and with products installed in well over 4000 schools in North America , is a recognized innovator in the literacy field. Peter is also a founding partner of Reid Eddison Inc., a consulting firm that provides business mentoring to the senior management teams of early-stage and high-growth technology companies. Prior to forming Reid Eddison, Peter was co-founder of Fulcrum Technologies, where as VP Marketing he helped it grow from start-up to a public company with $60 million in sales. He had earlier been a member of the founding management teams of several other Ottawa area technology companies, including Nabu Manufacturing Corporation and Mobius Software Limited. A graduate in Economics and a Tricolour Award winner from Queen's University, Peter is a member of the Board of Advisors of The Queen's University MBA for Science and Technology, and was a founding member of ZoneFive, the technology-marketing forum of the Ottawa Center for Research and Innovation. Three participants competed for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize when presenting their 4th year projects to some students and judges. The students all gave excellent talks. The judges asked hard questions, especially since two of them had been previous participants and winners of the same competition.

The 1st place winner did his talk on his Low Noise Amplifier circuit, designed in CMOS. He went on to win first place in the next level of competition against RMC, and Queen's. Congratulations Peter Popplewell!
